Dr. Andreas Schmidt, Head of the Andernach Eye Centre, recently underwent his own lens exchange with the Liberty² dual-lens system. In an interview, he shares his personal experiences and explains how the decision to opt for Liberty² has changed his life.

The path to choosing the dual lens system Liberty²

Dr. Schmidt suffered from an incipient posterior shell opacity in his left eye, which impaired his vision and made wearing glasses in the operating room with fogged lenses increasingly uncomfortable. “As a result, my visual performance deteriorated and I found wearing glasses in the operating room with a face mask and fogged-up lenses particularly annoying,” says Dr. Schmidt. His desire for more visual comfort and freedom from glasses arose when he realized that his vision was deteriorating and his working environment was becoming uncomfortable as a result.

Dr. Schmidt became aware of the Liberty² system through his surgeon, Dr. Knebel. Dr. Knebel had already implanted Liberty² several times and advised him to find out more about the dual lens system. After thorough research, he decided to go for it: “I researched the Liberty² system on the Internet and was immediately convinced to have it implanted.”

Positive effects of the Liberty² IOL on everyday life

Dr. Schmidt is very satisfied with the result: “Being free of glasses in all areas is already having a very positive impact.” He appreciates the independence that gives him the opportunity to wear normal sunglasses and work in the operating room without foggy lenses. Dr. Schmidt also notices the difference in his everyday life and during sporting activities: “It’s much more comfortable during sport, as glasses can no longer fog up. It’s much more comfortable when playing tennis.”

Dr. Schmidt mentions slight visual impairments at night, but these are not bothersome: “I have those famous halos around light sources at night, but I don’t find them bothersome.” Finally, Dr. Schmidt emphasizes that he recommends Liberty² from his own experience: “I can now tell my patients about the Liberty² dual lens system from my own experience. The patient already thinks that if the ophthalmologist has the system implanted himself, it must be a very good system.”
